Annually ACTIVE SH arranges for several incoming students to be mentored at the Peppers Estate and at Abiding Care,
2 local RCFE's ( Residential Care Facility for Elders ) located in Santa Barbara. These are two 6 bed
Care facilities that mentors 2-4 SBCC students a year. There are 2 levels that can be applied for;
Basic Caregiver. This level can be valuable for a student on a health care track, from
CNA to RN levels and above, as well as simply gaining the skills and work habits necessary for continuing as an entry level
caregiver.
This begining level is also of interest to students desiring a live/work situation, without knowing whether they will
continue in the field or not, but still desiring a work exchange program.
Administrator Protege Program. This 2 year work/study program is designed to mentor a student into an
important position as an RCFE Administrator. There are 8000 RCFE's in the State of California, and almost every State in the
Union has a program for the licensure for Elderly Care homes.
The vast majority are '6-beds' appearing in every community throughout the State. Many owner / operators own several
homes and command significant careers and incomes. The administrators of larger RCFE facilities, often Corporate, are
hired at handsome Executive pay scales as well. There are 1-2 protege's accepted at a time, and they are personally mentored
by the Administrators of the Peppers Estate in on the job real time training.
The training includes the State 40 hour course and subsequent addition to the facility as an active Administrator. This
will count as valid administrator time, and allow the student to enter the job market with experience, as well as having
or being near having 2 years experience. This is an important point in time, as several State regulations allow administrators
to preform certain training functions and self certifying tasks reserved for those with 2 years or more direct experience.
Also, insurance guidelines change for facilities with administrators at and above 2 years. Our approach is to accomplish this
time sensitive issue during the training time itself.
Both levels recieve a live/work shared room arrangement that provides complete room and board in exchange for 20 hours
a week of Care Home work ( 22 hrs. for Admin's ). Generally, the student is put in charge of a single Care home
day of the week ( usually Sat. or Sun. to accomodate a student ) in a 10-12 hour shift. The balance of
the required time is done in segments that compliment thier school schedule, such as 2 or 3 hour segments. There are no other
housing costs to the student. All utilities and meals are included.
Costs associated with SBCC courses, required State courses and tests are not included.

The Peppers is located in a beautiful 8M mansion on 1.6 acres in Montecito, 4.3 miles and about 30-40 minute bus ride
to campus. There is a bus stop immediately at the front gates of the Peppers. The facility offers an excellent work exchange
program and a highly valuable mentor Admin program.
Students interested will not be typical college students, as living in an elder care home and a State licensed facility
requires a no visitor policy and a notably ecilpsed social lifestyle. Care and compassion for others and the skills
of caregiving will be a requirement, or be acquired. R U right for us?
All Protege's will need have the following qualifications and certficates to qualify;

the agencies contacted.
This can be an interesting and rewarding way to finish college and accomplish the basics of a career while covering housing
