Food stock is delivered weekly based on the house
history. Up to a dozen eggs per student are delivered however the average is about 2.5 dozens for a house
of 6. Up to a loaf of bread per student weekly as well, however the average is 3-4 loaves. Both the cleaning schedule and
the food delivery are considered school support services, so they are implemented when school is in session. There are no
deliveries in early August, during spring break or over Christmas break. However we do bring smaller care packages during
early August to help as the population grows during move- in. No cleaning or food supplies are brought during Christmas
break.
Eggs are the only items which are removed and
replaced weekly, to avoid any buildup of eggs which become dated. All other stock is renewed based on what is still on hand.
Items which are fully used are replaced and increased until that houses level is found or we hit our limit.
Each house will be different. SO, after a few weeks email inquiries are made and exchanges are suggested and encouraged.
For instance, most of the girl houses generally use less mac and cheese and may request more fruit. Drop hot dogs and add
another milk?ok. An item can be increased if another is reduced, and so on. About 2 cycles of this process is allowed for
each semester.
Houses which band together and cook
on a household basis will benefit the most from our service. Individual cooking also works, but this focuses on the cereal,
noddles and mac and cheese. The pots of rice, potatoes, big pasta nights and oatmeal breakfasts make great group meals.
Why Food?
Many of the materials we provided are not only for convenience, but it also helps create organization and often stops problems!
If laundry soap is provided for instance, then 6 small boxes do no need
to be purchased, stored and safeguarded separately by 6 students. The issues of borrowing and loaning between room
mates are eliminated. And we are doing all the running around, buying in bulk, purchasing and delivering right to the
houses for everyone.
Food Notes
Prepared meals are not allowed to be provided within the City of Santa Barbara. Active Student
Housing does not and cannot provide prepared meals. However providing materials for many household requirements and general
food stuff that the students can prepare themselves can be provided.
Although most food groups are represented, we ask all families to
consider our provisions as the cereals, condiments and the starches ONLY, when calculating your
students needs for a balanced diet. Some may well live on our provisions, but fresh vegetables, dairy and fresh meats, fish
and fowl are not brought in by us. Additional nutrition can be had at the fine cafeterias on SBCC campus or by additional
shopping by each student.
Said another way: We do not claim or believe that our provided foodstuff represents, in any
way, a complete or a balanced diet. Many items are of the condiment nature or just staple foods.
Nontheless, we try and provide as high a value as we can by buying in bulk and bringing unexpected
value for each student renter.
We hope cooking skills may begin HERE at Active Student Housingh for some,
who may later remember back to thier college year for fond memories of boiling water (hot dogs!), scrambling eggs and making
spaghetti and meatballs!
